A home that is properly airsealed prevents hot, humid outside air from leaking in and cool, conditioned air from leaking out during the summer. In the winter, the home prevents cold, dry air from leaking in and warm air from leaking out. A typical home’s air leakage accounts for around 30% of the energy costs to heat and cool the home and creates uncomfortable spaces with the home. Properly sealed ductwork helps to deliver the conditioned air to the spaces. Ductwork that is not installed properly accounts for around 17% of the costs to heat and cool a standard home.
An ENERGY STAR home has been extensively airsealed and the ducts have been sealed properly. Both of these features are inspected and tested by an independent Home Energy Rater such as Builders Energy Rater.
Windows don’t just provide a view- they also help to maintain comfort in the home. High performance windows have a special coating installed on one of the surfaces of the glass that helps keep out the radiant heat from the sun in the summertime and the heat in during the winter. This coating is called “low-e” and is found in windows typically installed in an ENERGY STAR home. A side benefit of the low-e coating- window treatments last longer and furniture fabric tends to fade less!
Insulation that is properly installed fills the framed cavity completely, giving you the full benefit of the rated R-value of the insulation. Typical homes use fiberglass batts that are poorly installed, leaving gaps and voids in the insulation. ENERGY STAR homes use insulation that fills the cavity and has no gaps or voids. How do you know the difference? An independent Home Energy Rater must inspect the quality of the insulation installation of every ENERGY STAR home prior to the home receiving its certification. While you may never see the insulation inside the walls of your home, this is one feature that you can feel! Walls and ceilings that are poorly insulated allow more heat to travel through them, creating interior surfaces that radiate heat and create uncomfortable rooms. ENERGY STAR homes are inspected to ensure that the home has insulation that is properly installed for your comfort.
